Kyanna Giles had a game for the ages Sunday, and the Winnipeg Wesmen needed every bit of it.
Giles, a fifth-year guard, scored a program-record 44 points and added 14 rebounds to lead the Wesmen women's basketball team to a 95-85 win over the Manitoba Bisons in the final game of the CJOB Shootout at the Duckworth Centre.Â
While Giles' scoring spree didn't come during a Canada West conference game, it was nonetheless the most points scored by a Wesmen player in the Canada West era, topping the 43 points Antoinette Miller had in 2017.Â
Giles fouled out in the fourth quarter after shooting 17-for-33 from the field and 7-for-12 from the free-throw line.Â
The Wesmen improved to 6-0 in non-conference play this season and played without starting guard
Anna Kernaghan (knee) and reserve forward
Alyssa Porco (quadriceps) who both were injured in Friday's win over Brandon.Â
Raizel Guinto scored 14 of her 23 points after halftime and
Julia Schatkowsky, a fifth-year transfer from CMU, had her best game in a Wesmen uniform with 12 points and seven rebounds.Â
"I think every game we're learning the types of rotations that work for us and how we have to adjust our defence based on who we have on the floor," said Wesmen head coach
Alyssa Cox, who coached her first games since being appointed head coach in the off-season. "I think today we had a couple of match-ups that hurt us that we need to be able to adjust to a little bit faster."
Emily Johnson led four Bisons in double figures with 19 points. Lauren Bartlett and Brynn Endicott had 16 apiece, and Ayva Khan added 10.Â
The Wesmen led by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter and trailed only four times all game, never by more than two points.
