Box Score Julia Schatkowsky had a game for the ages, and
Robyn Boulanger had a couple of career-highs as the Winnipeg Wesmen rolled to a convincing win on Opening Night.
Schatkowsky had a career-high 20 rebounds and Boulanger had career-highs fo 26 points and six three-pointers in lead the Wesmen to an 85-49 win over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack in the Canada West women's basketball season-opener at the Duckworth Centre.
Schatkowsky's 20 boards was the second highest in Wesmen history, behind only Debbie Steele's 29 in 1979.
"It's phenomenal," said Wesmen head coach Alyssa Cox, who enjoyed her first career conference win. "It's exactly what we ask of her, and she's been consistent in her rebounding effort. It's really great to see. Not every player is motivated by that kind of a stat, so it's awesome because we need it. We need some big presence from her and our other posts."
Boulanger topped her previous career-highs of 25 points and five threes as the Wesmen opened the season with a resounding triumph after going all the way to the national final a season ago.
Kyanna Giles had 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Wesmen, who led 24-12 after a quarter and held the Wolfpack (0-1) to just five points in the fourth quarter.
"We definitely take a look at some of what we were doing," Cox said. "Offensively, trying to clean up some things that we know we're going to need to be strong moving forward. Defensively we set goals for ourselves throughout that game ... and just really make sure that we're performing at the level that we see ourselves at against any team."
Danijela Kovacevic's 12 points led the Wolfpack, who also got 10 rebounds from Maggie Fehr.
The Wesmen scored 27 points off 22 TRU turnovers and won the rebounding battle 58-39.
The two teams meet again Saturday (7 p.m.) with
tickets available online now.
