WBB | Giles, Guinto shine as Wesmen roll in home-opener

Raizel Guinto certainly looked right at home Friday night.

Guinto, the fifth-year transfer guard, had 16 points — 14 in the first half — and helped the Winnipeg Wesmen to a dominant 79-43 win over the Brandon Bobcats at the CJOB Shootout women's basketball tournament at the Duckworth Centre.

Guinto, who moved home to Winnipeg and decided to play one final year after four seasons at NCAA Louisiana Tech, added six steals, five rebounds and three assists in her first university game in her hometown.

Kyanna Giles led all scorers with 22 points, five assists and four rebounds as the 2022 national runners-up Wesmen were never particularly challenged. Winnipeg gave up the first basket of the game, and never trailed again, scoring 11 straight after that and cruising to its fourth win of the non-conference season.

Robyn Boulanger added 16 points of her own and Julia Schatkowsky, also playing her first Wesmen game at home, had a game-high 10 rebounds plus eight points.

The Wesmen won the rebounding battle 59-41.

Piper Ingalls led the Bobcats with 11 points and Kelsey Starchuk chipped in 10.

The Wesmen will host the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday (8 p.m.) to continue the three-day tournament. The Bobcats will take on Manitoba.
