WBB | Wesmen bully Thunderwolves for fifth straight win

Kyanna Giles got going early and the Winnipeg Wesmen cruised to another non-conference victory Saturday night.

Giles scored 12 of her game-high 27 points in the first quarter and the Wesmen women's basketball team handed the Lakehead Thunderwolves a 70-45 defeat on Day 2 of the CJOB Shootout at the Duckworth Centre.

Giles added nine rebounds and two steals and was 11-for-21 from the field as the Wesmen opened a 23-7 lead after a quarter, sparked by a 16-3 run over the first 6:33 of the game.

The win was Winnipeg's fifth straight in the non-conference season, following two wins against Trinity Western and one against Douglas College last weekend in B.C., and a dominant victory over Brandon on opening night of their own tournament on Friday.

Robyn Boulanger dropped 14 points and was 3-for-6 from three for the Wesmen, and Raizel Guinto added 11 points, five assists and three steals. Julia Schatkowsky had a team-high 11 rebounds.

Lakehead, which fell to 0-2 at the tournament, was led by Ally Burke's 13 points on 4-for-16 shooting. Lily Gruber-Schulz had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Thunderwolves, who were held to 18-for-70 shooting and 5-for-25 from three.

The Wesmen will take on the Manitoba Bisons at 1 p.m. Sunday to close out the non-conference pre-season.
