VICTORIA — Another big night from Julia Schatkowsky pushed the Winnipeg Wesmen to their third win of the season.
Schatkowsky, who had a Canada West-era record 20 rebounds seven days prior, put up a career-high 20 points along with six rebounds and four assists to help the Wesmen women's basketball team to a decisive 78-57 win over the host Victoria Vikes Friday night.
The Wesmen improved to 3-0 on the season and remained one of five unbeatens in the Canada West.
Kyanna Giles 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals for the Wesmen, who set the tone early on by holding the Vikes to just eight points in the first quarter and went into halftime up 44-24.
The Wesmen closed the second quarter on a 17-2 run, holding Victoria to just one field goal in the final 6:20 of the period. The Wesmen extended their advantage to as many as 22 in the second quarter after Schatkowsky, who scored 14 points in the first half, hit a three with 2:38 to play.
Schatkowsky finished 3-for-6 from the perimeter, her first three-point makes of the season.
Tamiya Ness added 12 points for the Wesmen, who were 13-for-37 from three and 27-for-75 from the field.
Abigail Becker's 20 points led the Vikes (1-2), while Ashlyn Day put up 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Wesmen held Victoria to 1-for-19 shooting from three and 24-for-70 from the field. The Vikes missed their first eight three-pointers before Day hit one with 7:12 to go in the third.
