WBB | Fourth-quarter surge not enough as Wesmen lose first

VICTORIA — A furious rally in the final quarter came up short Saturday, as the Winnipeg Wesmen lost their first game of the season.

Kyanna Giles had a team-high 30 points plus eight rebounds as the Wesmen women's basketball team suffered its first setback of the Canada West conference season, falling 86-84 to the host Victoria Vikes.

The Wesmen were outscored 25-7 in the second quarter as the Vikes (2-2) salvaged a split of the weekend doubleheader and sent the Wesmen to 3-1 on the season.

Winnipeg trailed by 14 with 9:16 to go in the game before putting together a late push that got the Wesmen to within one on a Giles three with two seconds to go.

Robyn Boulanger added 17 points and made five threes for the Wesmen, who shot 16-for-36 from three and 38.2 per cent from the field. Sadie McMillan-Stowards had a season-high 11 points off the bench, including 3 of 3 from the perimeter.

Julia Schatkowsky had a team-high 12 rebounds. The fifth-year post currently leads the conference in rebounding at 13.3 per game.

Ashlyn Day had a game-high 31 points to lead Victoria, which also got 23 points off the bench from Tegan McKinnon and 11 from Kate Johnson.

The Wesmen trailed 50-34 at the half, and were outrebounded 46-33.

The team will be back on the road again next weekend as the Wesmen head to Edmonton to take on the MacEwan Griffins on Friday and Saturday, with both games available live on Canada West TV.
