EDMONTON — When the Winnipeg Wesmen needed big threes, they relied on their shooting guard and, of course, their 6-foot-2 post.
Kyanna Giles had a career-high 33 points plus 12 rebounds, six assists and six steals, and helped lift the Wesmen women's basketball team to an 80-70 win over the MacEwan Griffins Friday night in Canada West conference play.
Robyn Boulanger hit two three-pointers, and Julia Schatkowsky added another in the waning minutes of the game as the Wesmen used a 9-2 run to gap a four-point game and come away with their fourth win in five conference games.
The Griffins, who trailed by as many as 16 points in the first quarter and trimmed a 30-16 deficit after one down to 46-37 at the half, cut the Wesmen lead to four on a Noelle Kilbreath layup with 3:09 to go in the game. Boulanger, however, hit a three on the next trip, and Schatkowsky responded with her own to make it 75-67 one minute after Kilbreath's bucket. Boulanger would add another in transition — off a Giles assist — to push the lead back to double digits, and the Wesmen would escape their first conference trip to MacEwan since 2018.
Boulanger finished with 16 points and Raizel Guinto added 15 to go along with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Schatkowsky posted her first career conference double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and shot 4-for-6 from the field, including 1-for-2 from three. In her last three games, Schatkowsky has made 5 of 11 from three.
Kilbreath had 26 points and nine rebounds to lead the Griffins (1-6), who also got 12 points from Shannon Majeau, 11 from Hayley Lalor and 10 points and 10 rebounds from Mackenzie Farmer.
The teams will meet again Saturday with tip time set for 7 p.m. CT and the action carried live on
Canada West TV.
