Ben Traa had the biggest block of his career Saturday and the Winnipeg Wesmen earned a weekend sweep thanks to it.
Traa, a right side converted from setter this season, assisted on a match-winning block on Caleb Kastelein and the Wesmen men's volleyball team pulled out a thrilling 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 21-25, 25-16, 21-19) victory over the Fraser Valley Cascades in Canada West conference action at the Duckworth Centre.
Traa was credited with an assisted block with
Liam Kristjanson, and the team flooded the floor after the big point and hoisted the St. Paul's High School product in the air to celebrate Winnipeg's second straight win.Â
Traa also had five kills on nine swings and an assist.Â
The Wesmen were led by
Nigel Nielsen's 19 kills, while Kristjanson and
Paxton Koop gave Winnipeg a potent duo up the middle with 10 kills apiece. Koop had four block assists and Kristjanson three and two assists.Â
Winnipeg improved to 4-4 on the season with UBC-Okanagan arriving in the city for a weekend set next Friday and Saturday.
The Wesmen hit .211 on the night, including .280 in the decisive fifth, a set in which the Wesmen managed to wipe out a modest two-point deficit with a Nielsen kill and a
Matt Klysh ace that tied the set at 10. From there, the teams played side-out volleyball with the Wesmen fending off two set points and the Cascades four of their own before Eric Dornez registered a kill and the Wesmen ended it on the block.
A night after seeting a career-high for assists, setter
Alex Krykewich did it again with 42.Â
Nimo Benne led the Cascades (2-6) with 19 kills and Kastelein had 18. Ryan Adams had a team-high 11 digs. UFV hit .256 for the match and was .333 in the fifth with 11 kills.Â
