EDMONTON — The Winnipeg Wesmen had to go deep in their emergency kit to pull out a win Saturday night.
Shawn Maranan had a game-high 27 points and the Wesmen men's basketball team outscored MacEwan 34-13 in the fourth quarter to earn a come-from-behind 87-80 Canada West conference win over the Griffins.
The Wesmen narrowly avoided granting the Griffins their first win of the season, but nevertheless improved to 4-2 on the season and escaped with a weekend sweep.
Maranan added four steals and four assists for the Wesmen, who trailed 38-30 at half and were then outscored 29-23 in the third quarter.
But the Wesmen surged in the final frame, thanks in large part to 26 fourth-quarter free-throw attempts, which were more attempts than the Wesmen had had in all but two games this season.
The Griffins pushed their lead to 67-49 with 53 seconds left in the third quarter, but a 9-0 Winnipeg run over the next two minutes got the Wesmen to within striking distance early in the fourth.
After a Damilola Osuma jumper with 2:32 to go put MacEwan up nine, the Wesmen tore off an 11-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 80-78 with 56 seconds left.
The Wesmen won despite not making a field goal for the final 3:54, scoring their final 18 points by way of free throws.
Alberto Gordo had 10 of his 12 points in the fourth, and Maranan had 11 fourth-quarter points.
Elijah Mensah came off the bench with 14 points and six rebounds as the Wesmen improved to 4-2 ahead of a home-and-home series with Brandon this week.
Isaiah Merk's 24 points paced MacEwan (0-8). Matthew Osunde added 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
