The Winnipeg Wesmen extended Brandon University's string of misery at the Duckworth Centre, and snapped its win streak while they were at it.
Shawn Maranan had 25 points, seven assists and was 5-for-10 from three to lead the Wesmen men's basketball team to a wild 108-99 Canada West conference win over the Bobcats Thursday night.Â
The win extended Winnipeg's home-floor win streak over Brandon to 12 games dating back to 2009. Since head coach
Mike Raimbault took over the program in 2010, the Wesmen are 21-3 against the Bobcats, with all three losses coming in Brandon.Â
The 108 points were the most the Wesmen have scored in a game since a 113-75 win at MacEwan, Nov. 9, 2018 and it marked the first time the Wesmen have hit the century mark since putting up 107 in a win versus Mount Royal, Feb. 1, 2020.Â
The Wesmen stormed out with a 34-16 first quarter and put up 60 points in the first half, a season-high, against a Brandon team that was sitting at the top of the Canada West standings with a 7-1 record and coming in with a seven-game win streak.
Donald Stewart had a career-high 20 points with three blocks for the Wesmen (5-2), who won their third straight game and temporarily moved into third place in the conference.
The Wesmen had six players score in double figures:
Malachi Alexander had 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists;
Alberto Gordo had 16, eight and six;
Mikhail Mikhailov had 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds; and
Paul Francisco chipped in 10 points off the bench.Â
The Bobcats (7-2) were lead by Anthony Tsegakele's 26 points, while Jahmaal Gardner had 21. Sultan Haider Bhatti added 19 points, and Khari Ojeda-Harvey 18 for the Bobcats, who came into the game tops in the country in both points per game and three-point efficiency.Â
But Brandon managed just 32.1 per cent from three, more than 13 percentage points below its season average.Â
The Wesmen never trailed, opening the game on an 8-0 run. The Bobcats made a couple of pushes in the second half, notably early in the third quarter when they went on an 8-0 run to get the deficit down to 66-61. Francisco, however, hit one of his two threes on the night right after to give the Wesmen some breathing room again.Â
In the fourth, the Bobcats pulled to 83-80 on a Tsegakele bucket, but the Wesmen had an answer for that, too, tearing off a 7-0 run to get the lead back to double digits.Â
The two teams will meet Saturday in Brandon at 7 p.m., a game that can be seen live on
Canada West TV.
