MVB | Wesmen make quick of Heat to win fourth straight

Aside from a subpar first set Friday night, the Winnipeg Wesmen looked the dominant part this weekend.

The UWinnipeg men's volleyball team continued to roll Saturday, holding the UBC-Okanagan Heat to .143 attacking and their second-lowest kill total of the season in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-22) cruise in Canada West conference play at the Duckworth Centre.

The Heat mustered only 30 kills, their lowest total since posting 22 in a season-opening loss to Mount Royal, and had 39 points, their third-lowest total of the season, as the Wesmen rolled to their fourth straight win and improved to 6-4.

It was a key early-season weekend sweep for the Wesmen, who came into the doubleheader tied with UBCO in the standings, but put some distance between the two teams on the Canada West ladder. The Wesmen are now tied with Saskatchewan for fifth in the league.

Nigel Nielsen had 19 kills, the fourth time this season — and the second time in three matches — he's recorded at least 19. He hit .481 and finished the weekend with an impeccable .490 attacking.

He also added six digs, two aces and a solo block.

Eric Dornez added 10 kills and eight digs, and Liam Kristjanson continued his effective attacking with eight kills on 19 attacks with only one error (.368).

Setter Alex Krykewich had eight digs and recorded 34 assists.

UBCO was led by Seba Manuel's 10 kills. Renn Petryk had six kills on six swings in the first set, but was held to just one more kill the rest of the way.
