BRANDON — The Winnipeg Wesmen weren't able to get started and the Brandon Bobcats couldn't be stopped Friday night.
The Wesmen men's volleyball team couldn't recover from a rough first set and the Bobcats cruised to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-22) Canada West conference win that snapped Winnipeg's four-match win streak.
Liam Kristjanson had 12 kills to lead the Wesmen, who hit .286 and .250 in Sets 2 and 3, but struggled to a .069 percentage in a first set that was dominated by the home team.
After building a modest lead to start the first, the Bobcats went on a five-point run to push a 13-10 lead to 18-10.
The Wesmen didn't hold a lead in the first two sets, but started the third set off stronger, building a 6-3 edge early before the Bobcats put together a three-point run to equalize.
Thomas Bridle got a kill to make it 11-10, but that was the last time the Wesmen would lead as BU won six of the next eight points and held a comfortable advantage the rest of the way.
Winnipeg (6-5) hit .200 for the match, while Brandon (5-6) attacked at .317.
Paxton Koop had five kills on 12 swings and a team-high six digs for the Wesmen, who will host the back end of the home-and-home series on Saturday.
Darian Picklyk had four digs, which moved him into the top-10 in Canada West history with 754 for his career. He now trails Logan Brennan by 28 digs for most all-time in the Wesmen Canada West-era.
Max Brook's 10 kills led the Bobcats, and Jens Watt had a match-high seven kills.
Tickets are available online now for Saturday's match.
