BRANDON —
Kyanna Giles found another sensational statistical benchmark to put in the books.
Giles became the first player in Wesmen Canada West-era history to score at least 40 points and record at least 10 rebounds as the Wesmen women's basketball team shook off a sloppy first half to pull away and beat the Brandon Bobcats 84-62 Saturday night.
Giles tied a Wesmen Canada West-era record for points in a game with 43 and added 13 rebounds, becoming the first Wesmen player of the past 23 years to record such a double-double. Giles, who had 44 points in a non-conference win over Manitoba in October, tied Antoinette Miller's record for points in a conference game set in 2017.
The Wesmen, however, weren't able to get the Bobcats off their back until the second half. While it looked like Winnipeg was going to roll to another win with an 8-0 run to start the game, and a 29-18 lead after a quarter, the Bobcats battled back with a 12-0 run to take a one-point lead. The Wesmen were outscored 20-14 in the second quarter and held a five-point edge going into half.
The Bobcats then briefly took a lead on a Piper Ingalls three with 5:48 to go in the third that made it 50-47. The Wesmen then went on an 18-5 run to close the quarter and held the Bobcats to just six points in the fourth to improve to 7-1 and move into a tie for first place in the Canada West conference.
Julia Schatkowsky had 10 points and 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the season, and
Tamiya Ness had career-highs with 12 rebounds, five steals, while scoring seven points.
Ingalls had 22 to lead the Bobcats (0-10) and Reeta Tulkki added 10 points.
