SASKATOON — The Winnipeg Wesmen earned a Saskatoon split Saturday night.
Daniel Thiessen had 20 kills and the Wesmen men's volleyball team triumphed 3-1 (14-25, 25-22, 25-20, 27-25) over the host Saskatchewan Huskies in Canada West conference play.
It was Thiessen's fourth match this season with at least 20 kills and second such match in the past four.
The win pushed the Wesmen record to 8-6 and got them back into sole possession of first place in the East Division with two matches to play — next week against second-place Brandon.
After a rough first set, in which the Huskies won nine of the last 11 points, the Wesmen settled in and avoided a road sweep.
The Wesmen held the Huskies to .000 attacking in the second set, hit .429 themselves in the third and at one point won six straight points in the fourth set to erase an early two-point deficit. That set, however, went into extra points after Saskatchewan won four straight points to tie it at 20 before the teams played side-out volleyball up to 25-25. From there, Thiessen got back-to-back kills and finished the night off.
Setter Matt Klysh had a career-high nine digs as well as 43 assists. Eric Dornez had nine kills and Nigel Nielsen and Liam Kristjanson both had eight, with Kristjanson hitting .513 for the night.
Dylan Mortensen led the Huskies (7-7) with 10 kills.
The Wesmen hit .259 for the match while Saskatchewan hit .232.
Saskatchewan managed seven solo blocks and 12 block assists. Winnipeg had two and four.
