Box Score SASKATOON — The Winnipeg Wesmen were amped for an upset, but a pivotal third-set run undid a potential big win on the road.
The Saskatchewan Huskies won three straight points to erase a late-set deficit in the third and ultimately prevailed with a 3-1 (25-27, 28-26, 26-24, 25-20) Canada West conference victory in the penultimate match of the conference season Friday night.
The two teams will meet again Saturday to wrap up conference play and then await other results to see how the first-round playoff pools will shake down.
The Wesmen looked poised to pull of a big road win with the Huskies on the ropes in the third. After a three-point run of their own gave them a 12-9 lead, the Wesmen maintained that three-point edge through to 22-19 when the Huskies took over.
Averie Allard then got a kill that was originally ruled out of bounds by the linesperson but was overruled by the head official.
The Wesmen used their own run to make things interesting in the second set. Winnipeg fought off five set points on a six-point serving run from Kely Warmington that gave the visitors a brief 25-24 lead.
Emma Parker had 22 kills and 17 digs to lead the Wesmen (6-9) while hitting .370 on the night. Selva Planincic added 13 kills, 10 digs, two aces and hit .323.
The Wesmen hit .444 in the first set and .252 for the night.
The Huskies (13-2) 20 kills and 10 digs from Emily Koshinsky. Mandi Fraser added 15 kills.
Saskatchewan hit .295 on the night in winning its fifth straight match.
