WSOC | Second-half surge gives Vikes win over Wesmen

Amy Anderson lamented a lack of quality in the attacking third Saturday as the Winnipeg Wesmen dropped their Canada West home-opener.

After playing level through 45 minutes, the Wesmen women's soccer team gave up two second-half goals and the Victoria Vikes earned their first win of the conference season, posting a 2-0 win at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex in their first trip to Winnipeg in six years.

The Vikes scored goals in the 47th and 87th minutes to hand Winnipeg its fourth loss in four matches this season.

"I thought we defended well against a quality side," Anderson, the Wesmen head coach said. "Our play in the final third is something we're really going to need to focus on going forward."

After a level first 45 minutes, Ruby Nicholas knocked in a loose ball shortly after the start of the second half to give Victoria a 1-0 lead. Tess Vande Vegte headed in a corner moments before full time to pad the lead.

The Wesmen struggled to threaten with four shots, three on goal, on the day. Jazmyn Castro's shot off a set piece in the 57th minute was Winnipeg's best chance, but Vic keeper Kayley Lidstone made an impressive punch on the ball to keep it out of the top corner.

"I think it's important we keep getting better from here," Anderson said. "I thought we defended well, but I don't want us to have this same feeling in a few weeks where we don't capitalize on chances. The next few games it's within our control. What are we going to do about it? I just think we need to be proactive with this. The good thing is it's fixable and the good thing is we're getting chances, so we need to focus on capitalizing."

Lidstone was credited with three saves on the day while Taryn Raabe made 10 in the Wesmen goal.

Winnipeg's challenge becomes even greater for its next match as the Wesmen welcome the No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds Sunday at 11 a.m.
