Box Score It had been nearly three years since the Winnipeg Wesmen faced a west-coast opponent, and Sunday afternoon they got a stark reminder of what the best in the country looks like.
The No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds scored three first-half goals and remained undefeated in the Canada West with a 5-0 win over the Wesmen women's soccer team at Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.Â
Danielle Steer scored her sixth and seventh goals of the season to pace the Thunderbirds, who improved to 7-0-0 on the season and swept their first trip to Winnipeg since 2016.Â
The T-Birds scored three times on starter
Taryn Raabe, who was replaced at halftime by
Madison Priebe. Raabe made four saves before being subbed off, and Priebe finished the match with six.
Nisa Reehal got UBC going with a goal in just the second minute and Steer followed nine minutes later with her first of the day. Ella Sunde, three minutes before half, made it 3-0 when she struck a shot inside the far corner past Raabe.Â
Steer added her second in the 54th minute and Jade Taylor-Ryan finished the scoring with a goal in time added on.Â
"I was impressed with our effort. I thought we had full effort and we didn't give up," Wesmen head coach
Amy Anderson said. "Defensively we helped each other out and I was really pleased with how we came out. They did everything I asked of them for today."
The Thunderbirds generated 22 shots, 16 on target, while Winnipeg mustered four and two.Â
"I thought we (started well) today, which really put us on the front foot, which was good so we could be comfortable in possession and play and credit to our team to find a couple goals early to sort of manage the game," UBC head coach Jesse Symons said.
The Wesmen will remain at home for the next four matches, starting Friday night when they host the Regina Cougars (7 p.m.). Saskatchewan follows on Saturday (7 p.m.), and Regina and Winnipeg will meet again Sunday (1 p.m., U of M) to complete the final 45 minutes from the Aug. 27 match that was rained out in Regina.Â
