WSOC: Wesmen draw dashes Bisons playoff hopes

The Winnipeg Wesmen drew out their daggers on their crosstown rivals Saturday afternoon.

Jazmyn Castro had a goal and an assist and the Wesmen women's soccer team earned a 2-2 draw with the Manitoba Bisons at the U of M.

The result was a point for the Wesmen but, most notably, it officially eliminated the Bisons from playoff contention in the Prairie Division.

The Bisons entered the Duckworth derby without an outside shot at the post-season and certainly needing two wins from the home-and-home series. The single point helps the Bisons little as they now trail Alberta by seven points with two matches to play.

The Wesmen were minutes from taking all three points from the match but Nyema Prentice-White scored in time added on in the second half to equalize.

Castro set up Sydney Butler's goal in the eighth minute to stake Winnipeg (1-10-1) to a 1-0 lead. Prentice-White equalized in the 39th minute to send the teams into halftime tied at 1.

Castro then put the Wesmen up early in the second, finishing in the 44th minute with Kennedy Shymko earning her first career assist.

Camille Forbes made eight saves for the Wesmen.
