There was one word
Amy Anderson kept coming back to as she took stock of a result that gave the Winnipeg Wesmen a point in the standings, but nonetheless left them feeling shortchanged.
"Gutted," the Wesmen women's soccer coach said Friday after her team settled for a 2-2 draw with the Regina Cougars in a Canada West conference match at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.Â
Reserve Sophia Stevens scored the game-tying goal in time added on — just seconds away from the final whistle — and the Cougars denied the Wesmen their first win of the season.Â
"We had it. The girls know that, too," Anderson said. "And I'm really proud of them because we came out, we attacked. We had it. I'm gutted for the girls because they could see how disappointed they are. And you can see how our program has shifted because we're not just happy with a point.
"Not capitalizing on early chances in the first came back on us."
The Wesmen twice lost one-goal leads, but were full marks for bouncing back after a deflating Regina goal in the second evened the score.Â
Hasana Church scored her first career goal for Winnipeg (0-5-1) in the 16' minute, pouncing on a loose ball in the box after a Wesmen corner kick, one of seven they earned on the night.Â
Madison Priebe, making her first career start on home pitch, was excellent throughout and carried a clean sheet into the 64th minute. That was when Jessica Merk broke through for Regina's first goal and a 1-1 tie.
Just 12 minutes later, however,
Emma Friesen — who had had a long shot to the top corner ring off the bar and somehow stay out of the goal moments earlier — found herself free on the left flank and slid a perfect shot past Regina keeper Ally Ford to restore Winnipeg's lead.Â
"The response was excellent," Anderson said. "I'm really proud of the players. We're attacking, we're creating opportunities. It's a matter of time before we start scoring more goals. And it feels like we're getting better and better."
Priebe made two official saves and Ford three, including a robbery on a
Sydney Arnold header in the 72nd minute that seemed bound for goal before Ford dove and knocked it off the line.Â
The Wesmen will take on Saskatchewan Saturday night (7 o'clock) back at Ralph Cantafio.
