WSOC | Huskies' header proves decisive in Saturday setback

Amy Anderson is confident in her back line's ability to hold things down, but is still looking for the attack up front to complement it.

Despite holding its own with one of the top teams in the Canada West's Prairie Division, the Winnipeg Wesmen dropped a 2-1 decision to the Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.

Cassidy Hayward scored her first goal of the season when she was unmarked in front of goal and headed home the game-winner in the 53rd minute off a cross from Nicole Burnett.

The win moved Saskatchewan (4-2-3) into a tie for first place in the Prairie Division while Winnipeg fell to 0-6-1.

The Huskies generated 12 shots but were limited to five on target and while their possession rate was higher than Winnipeg's, the Wesmen managed to limit much of the threatening play.

"We competed, it's our final third that still needs improvement," Anderson said. "We're competing with teams, but we have to work on our finishing."

The Wesmen held a brief lead in the first half after Sydney Arnold scored her first career goal, heading in a corner from Jazmyn Castro in the seventh minute. It was the second time this season the Wesmen had held a lead against the Huskies after a 1-0 advantage in the team's previous meeting Aug. 26 in Saskatoon.

The set pieces from Winnipeg have been a bright spot this season, with Castro proving adept on corners and giving the Wesmen a threat in those moments.

"We are scoring more off set pieces and that's a good thing," Anderson said. "I think it's great that Sydney scored (her first) and our set pieces are working."

Alyssa D'Agnone sixth of the season tied the game less than four minutes after Arnold's goal.

Taryn Raabe made three saves for the Wesmen, while Nadia Kalyar stopped two for Saskatchewan.
