Box Score For a few moments, the Winnipeg Wesmen looked like they had it in them to pull off the upset of the year.
But the Alberta Pandas scored two late goals and finally broke through the wall of
Madison Priebe to earn a 3-1 Canada West conference victory over the Wesmen women's soccer team Saturday at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.
Priebe was brilliant in the Winnipeg goal, making eight saves — most of the spectacular variety — in keeping the Wesmen in the match through 60-plus minutes.
"I like the fact that we're scoring (after falling behind), so we're not out of the game," Wesmen head coach
Amy Anderson said. "We're mentally thinking we can win the game, because every weekend we're going into it thinking we can get points. But I said to the players, 'The catch is at this level that if you slip up or you make a mistake, good teams are going to come at you.' So, we have to be ready for that. I like the resiliency that we have and we're still getting better every weekend"
After the Pandas got a goal from Adrienne Poulin two minutes short of halftime to go up 1-0, the Wesmen were able to respond in the 63rd minute.
Emma Friesen scored her second of the season off a brilliant through-ball from
Jazmyn Castro. Castro sprung Friesen free being the U of A back line, Friesen took a couple of steps and placed a perfect strike past Alberta keeper Autumn Wynn.
"Emma is an impact player for sure. She defines impact," Anderson said. "When she's on the field, things happen."
But the Pandas quickly pounced back: Poulin would score her second of the match in the 68th minute and McKayla Brault added an insurance goal in the 74th as the Pandas improved to 5-3-1 on the season.
