REGINA — The Winnipeg Wesmen got an early taste of bad luck Thursday night.
The Regina Cougars hit two free throws with less than a second on the clock in the fourth quarter to force overtime, and then finished with a 92-87 victory over the Wesmen men's basketball team in a non-conference game in the Queen City.
The Wesmen led by eight with 1:32 to go, but went scoreless the rest of the way as Regina used an 8-0 run capped by Nick Barnard's two free throws to force OT.
Shawn Maranan had a career-high 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Wesmen, who will take on Mount Royal on Friday before heading home.
Donald Stewart had a career-high 20 points with six rebounds, and
Mikhail Mikhailov, who joined the team for the second half of the 2021-22 season, posted his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.
Paul Francisco, a first-year Wesmen transfer from St. Clair College, came off the bench and scored 13.
Winnipeg played without freshman guard
Alberto Gordo, who didn't make the trip due to injury.
The Wesmen shot 40.5 per cent from the field and were 10-for-25 from three. They outrebounded the Cougars 50-46.
Jalen Edwards' 22 points off the bench paced the hosts, who had four players score in double figures while shooting 41.8 per cent from the floor.
