PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — The Winnipeg Wesmen rallied late to avoid an upset Friday night.
Kyanna Giles had 26 points and a career-high nine steals, and the Wesmen women's basketball team held UNBC to just five points over the final five minutes in a come-from-behind 72-65 Canada West conference win over the Timberwolves.
The Wesmen faced their largest deficit of the night when Sveta Boykova hit a three to make it 60-51 with 7:41 left in the fourth, and Rebecca Landry's three at the 5:07 mark kept UNBC up eight, 63-55. From there, though, the Wesmen found another gear forcing six Timberwolves turnovers as part of a decisive 15-0 run that pushed the Wesmen to 10-3 on the season.
Winnipeg forced 23 Timberwolves turnovers on the night that turned into 21 points, helping sustain an offence that shot just 6 of 27 from three.
Anna Kernaghan, who made her return to the lineup last weekend against Regina after missing the first half of the season with an injury, made her first three three-pointers and had 14 points at the half. She finished with 19 points, four rebounds and two steals.
"They fought hard and we were down, but I think we did a really good job staying composed and playing together as a team," Kernaghan, who made a key three with under two minutes to play, said after the game.
"... You're confident, you're up a bit and they hit shot after shot and we were missing. It takes a lot of drive to get back and say, 'We have to do this and we can't give up.'"
Robyn Boulanger added 13 points, and
Julia Schatkowsky had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Boykova led UNBC (4-9) with 18 points and 16 rebounds, Alina Shakirova dropped 17, and Laura Garcia-Garmendia scored 14.
The two teams meet again Saturday (7 p.m.) in a game that can be seen on
Canada West TV.
