PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — The Winnipeg Wesmen are off to the hottest start in program history thanks to a dominant second half Saturday night.
The Wesmen scored 54 second-half points and turned a two-point halftime edge into a 94-72 runaway win over the UNBC Timberwolves in a Canada West conference men's basketball contest Saturday afternoon.
The win was Winnipeg's fourth in a row and ninth out of the past 10 as the Wesmen improved to 11-3 and stayed in third place in the conference. The Wesmen have never gone this deep in a season with a winning percentage as high as the .786 they currently sport.
Mike Raimbault's 2012-13 team started the season 11-4 and the 1985-86 squad started 8-0 in GPAC play before losing its next four games.
But Raimbault's Wesmen are rolling ahead of two home games next weekend against the Fraser Valley Cascades, the team that they knocked out of the playoffs a season ago and the one that ended their season in 2019-20.
Mikhail Mikhailov was one rebound short of another double-double, but still mustered a game-high 25 points on 11-for-15 shooting.
Shawn Maranan had his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and the Wesmen also got 16 points from
Alberto Gordo and 10 from
Donald Stewart.
The Timberwolves trailed 40-38 at half and 52-51 with 4:10 to go in the third before the Wesmen found another gear. They closed the quarter on a 16-2 run and then scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 76-53.
UNBC (5-9) was led by Fareer Shittu's 27 points and 11 rebounds. Darren Hunter, who missed Friday's loss, had 12 off the bench and Micah Jesse scored 11.
For the second time in three games, the Wesmen shot better than 40 per cent from three knocking down 10 of 24 from the arc.
