After finishing off one of their worst quarters of the season, the Winnipeg Wesmen went to work at putting together one of their best.
The Wesmen scored 33 points in the second quarter and had six players score in double figures in a 101-66 rout of the Fraser Valley Cascades in a Canada West men's basketball contest Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.
The Wesmen (12-3) hit the century mark on the scoreboard for the second time this season in extending their win streak to five games. They've won 10 out of their last 11 and remained in third place in the conference with the win.
The 33-point second quarter was Winnipeg's second-highest output in a quarter this season and it marked the third time this season the Wesmen have scored at least 30 points in a period. The outburst came after the Wesmen scored only 13 points in the first quarter, despite starting the game on an 8-0 run.
Alberto Gordo had a team-high 16 points off the bench to lead the Wesmen. He also grabbed six rebounds, dished out four assists and hit four of six from three.
Emmanuel Thomas scored 14 points,
Shawn Maranan posted his second straight double-double with 12 points and 10 assists,
Mikhail Mikhailov added 13 points and eight rebounds, and
Ryan Luke and
Paul Francisco both scored 12 off the bench.
The Wesmen made 16 of 33 from three marking their best three-point shooting percentage since they made 12 out of 24 in a win at Trinity Western on Jan. 4, 2019. The 16 makes were the most by a Wesmen team since hitting 17 in a win at Brandon, Jan. 5, 2018.
Gordo scored 11 of his points in the second quarter as the Wesmen shot 52.2 per cent from the field and made seven of 12 threes.
After UFV's Courtney Anderson hit a jumper 1:19 into the second to put the Cascades up 21-19, the Wesmen tore off a 15-4 run. They put up another 15-4 stretch in the third quarter to push the lead to 22 with 4:36 left in the period. A 12-0 run over the final 1:28 of the third and first 1:40 of the fourth jumped the lead up to 81-53 and shortly after that the Wesmen emptied their bench.
Anderson's 19 points led the Cascades, who had a three-game win streak snapped. Dylan Kinley scored 16 points, and Dario Lopez had 10 with 13 rebounds.
The two teams will clash again Saturday at 5 p.m., with
