Kyanna Giles is running out of records to break.
The fifth-year guard set the Winnipeg Wesmen women's basketball record for most points in a Canada West conference game, scoring 46 on Friday to lift the Wesmen to an 85-82 victory over the Fraser Valley Cascades in a top-10 showdown at the Duckworth Centre.
It was the third time this season, and second in conference play, that Giles has scored at least 40 points in a game. She scored 44 against the Manitoba Bisons in the pre-season and put up 43 against Brandon in December.
Giles also set career-highs for free throw attempts and makes with 17 and 16.
She was pretty efficient from the field, too. Giles shot 48 per cent from the floor on 29 attempts, and made two of six from three. She also added nine rebounds and three steals.
Giles' 46 ranks third all-time in Wesmen history behind Sandra Carroll's 51 against Regina in 1994 and Beth Cochran's 48 in 1983, both of those coming in the GPAC era.
She scored 14 in the first quarter as the Wesmen (11-4) opened a 23-20 lead. Giles scored 10 in the second quarter, 10 in the third and 12 in the fourth, including a key three with 2:15 remaining that put the Wesmen up 83-79. Maddy Gobeil answered that with a three of her own on the next possession, but the Wesmen managed to get four straight stops to close the game.
Winnipeg's
Robyn Boulanger added 11 points, eight of them coming in the fourth quarter including two free throws that pushed the lead to three with five seconds left. The Cascades got a good look at a three on the final possession but Lauren Clements' attempt from the left wing bounced off the rim and the Wesmen survived.
Anna Kernaghan scored in double digits for the second time in three games since returning from injury. She scored 16 points and added six rebounds.
The Cascades fell to 0-8 lifetime in the Duckworth Centre and 2-12 overall against the Wesmen in Canada West play despite getting 38 points, nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals from 2022 conference all-star Gobeil.
Julia Tuchsherer added 21 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Cascades (11-4), who had their three-game win streak snapped.
The two teams meet again Saturday (7 p.m.) and tickets are available online at
