CALGARY — The Winnipeg Wesmen snapped a decade-long losing streak Friday and it didn't come easy.
Mikhail Mikhailov had a career-high 24 points and added a team-high 12 rebounds to help the Wesmen men's basketball win in Calgary for the first time since 2013 in a 94-92 overtime victory.
The Wesmen led by 13 with four minutes to go in regulation before the Dinos came storming back with a 10-0 run that took just 1:43 of game time and cut the Winnipeg edge to 77-74.
The Dinos eventually tied the game at 81 on free throws from Mason Foreman, and Mikhailov followed with a clutch elbow jumper with 23 seconds left that restored the Winnipeg lead. Foreman would get fouled on the other end and hit both to once again tie the game and force overtime.
Mikhailov also shot 12-for-17 from the field.
In the extra frame,
Shawn Maranan had seven of the team's 11 points, and added a crucial rebound on his own free-throw miss with nine seconds left that iced the game.
Alberto Gordo had a career-high 21 points with seven rebounds for the Wesmen, who have moved into sole possession of third place in the Canada West with a five-game win streak that has put them at 7-2 on the season.
Freshman
Ryan Luke gave Winnipeg great minutes off the bench with a career-high 13 points, including a bit layup in overtime.
Malachi Alexander added 10 points along with seven assists, five rebounds and four steals.
The Wesmen had lost eight straight to the Dinos and their last win came Nov. 9, 2013 in Calgary when they capped off a weekend sweep.
Foreman had 25 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Dinos, who also got 13 points from Ezeoha Santiago and Jeffrey Tezo, and 11 apiece from Noah Warton and Spencer Roberts.
