The Winnipeg Wesmen needed everything their veteran outsides had to give them to pull of a thrilling win Friday night.
Fifth-year seniors
Emma Parker and
Ashleigh Laube combined for 38 kills and 29 digs to lead the Wesmen women's volleyball team to a 3-2 (21-25, 25-17, 25-19, 20-25, 15-13) Canada West conference victory at the Duckworth Centre.
With the win, the Wesmen improved to 9-4 on the season and moved into a tie for third place in the Canada West with the Calgary Dinos. The Cougars fell to 8-5 and one spot below the Wesmen.Â
Parker and Laube also combined for 108 swings on the night, but as a duo hit .241 in helping the Wesmen to their fifth straight win. Parker had 21 kills (58 swings)Â and 10 digs, and Laube had 17 kills (50 swings) and a season-high 19 digs.Â
The Wesmen hit .251 as a team, their second-highest output of the season.Â
Five Winnipeg players recorded at least 10 digs, with
Taylor Cangemi having 17,
Selva Planincic 15 and
Portia Switzer 14. Switzer also had 45 assists.Â
Taylor Kleysen chipped in with seven kills on 17 swings to hit .412.Â
Haley Roe led the Cougars with 19 kills and 12 digs, and Nyadholi Thokbuom had 12 kills while hitting .345. Madison Marshall had a team-high 18 digs.Â
The Cougars hit .218 on the night, below their season average of .236.Â
