WVB | Wesmen can't match magic of Friday; get swept on Saturday

The Winnipeg Wesmen will have to settle for a split against one of the Canada West's power programs.

The Mount Royal Cougars, who went to the national championship last season, showed more of their worth Saturday in posting a 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-19) Canada West conference women's volleyball victory Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.

And while the Wesmen, who won in five on Friday, were undoubtedly looking to pull off what would have been a seismic sweep of this weekend, they will gladly take one out of two against a team right there with them in the standings and one that finished second in the country a year ago.

Both teams moved to 9-5 on the season and now a four-way tie exists for third behind Trinity Western and UBC. Winnipeg now heads to Calgary to take on the Dinos in another weekend doubleheader with huge implications in the conference standings.

Emma Parker had 12 kills and 11 digs to lead the Wesmen, who had their five-match win streak snapped. Taylor Cangemi had a team-high 12 digs.

But the Wesmen offence had very little going its way as Winnipeg was held to .072 attacking on the night with only 24 kills on 111 swings.

Dolly Thokbuom led MRU with 12 kills and five blocks. Haley Roe also had 12 kills and Madison Marshall 10 with 13 digs. Sarah McKillican had a match-high 19 digs.
