MVB | Wesmen rally falls short in five-set defeat

The Winnipeg Wesmen summoned a comeback Saturday that nearly snapped a losing streak.

Eric Dornez had a career-high 17 kills and the Wesmen men's volleyball team battled back from down two sets before ultimately falling 3-2 (25-16, 25-23, 24-26, 23-25, 15-11) to the Mount Royal Cougars in a Canada West conference match Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.

Dornez hit .289 and added five digs and two aces for the Wesmen, who felt to 6-8 with their fourth straight loss ahead of a trip to Calgary to face the Dinos next weekend.

Nigel Nielsen added 15 kills and six digs for the Wesmen, who hit -.278 in the first set, but raised their efficiency in the second and third sets, putting up 27 kills combined and hitting better than .300 in that span.

The Wesmen trailed by as many as seven in the second set when, down 22-15, they scored five straight and seven of the next eight to pull to 23-22 down.

Chris Byam had 20 kills to lead MRU, which improved to 11-3 on the season with its sixth straight win. It was the first time in four matches a team had even won a set off the Cougars.

Jacob Van Geel added 18 kills and Luis Lange 11.

Darian Picklyk had a match-high 17 digs and, in the process, passed former Wesmen Logan Brennan for eighth all-time for career digs in the Canada West. Picklyk now holds the Wesmen program record for digs in a career with 786.

The Wesmen hit .174 for the night, while the Cougars hit .285.
