The Winnipeg Wesmen were burned by a late goal Saturday in the first leg of the Duckworth Challenge.
Taryn Cabak's header in the 82nd minute proved the winner as the Manitoba Bisons beat the Wesmen women's soccer team 1-0 in a Canada West conference match at IG Field.
Cabak charged in from the back side and converted on a corner kick past keeper
Madison Priebe to help the Bisons take the first stage of the annual three-sport Duckworth Challenge.
The two teams meet again Sunday (3 p.m., Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex).
The Wesmen (0-7-4) were not without their opportunities to pull ahead earlier.
Madisyn Furber nearly put the Wesmen ahead in the 46th minute when she headed a
Jazmyn Castro toward goal, but Bisons defender Tabata Bravo happened to be in the right place on the line to keep it away.
Earlier, forward
Brianna Machado had a run down the right flank but saw her threatening shot go off the side of the goal.
Priebe made 12 saves in the Wesmen goal, while Karina Bagi made five for Manitoba (3-8).
Priebe was named the Duckworth Challenge player of the game for the Wesmen, while Breyanna Johnston-Krulicki earned the nod for the Bisons.
