WBB | Wesmen drop second straight as T-Birds soar to 4-0

The Winnipeg Wesmen will hit the road next week looking to snap a slump, while the UBC Thunderbirds will do the same but with a very different standpoint.

Mona Berlitz had 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Thunderbirds women's basketball team to a 77-42 Canada West conference win over the Wesmen Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen fell to 1-3 early in the season while UBC continued its season-opening string of wins to improve to 4-0.

Winnipeg will be in Lethbridge next weekend for a pair against the Pronghorns, while the Thunderbirds will be back on the Prairies a week from now to face Saskatchewan in a clash of two conference undefeateds.

Tana Layton came off the bench to score 12 points and lead the Wesmen, who were down 20-5 after a quarter and trailed 42-20 at half.

Emilia Banmann scored 13 points off the bench for the T-Birds, who also got 10 from fellow Winnipegger Olivia Weekes.

The Thunderbirds outrebounded the Wesmen 55-34.

The Wesmen shot 27.4 per cent from the field while UBC shot 39.7 per cent but was held to 4-for-21 from three.
