CALGARY — The Winnipeg Wesmen got everyone involved in posting an impressive road win.
All 12 players recorded a stat and 11 played double-digit minutes as the Wesmen men's basketball team won its fourth straight game, downing the Mount Royal Cougars 87-48 in a Canada West conference contest Friday night.
The Wesmen improved to 6-1 on the season and remained in a tie for second place in the conference with Brandon.
Winnipeg outscored the Cougars 38-26 in the first half, but turned it up further in the third quarter. A 14-2 run took an 11-point lead up to 56-33 with 3:59 to go in the period, and the Wesmen added another 13-4 run over the final 3:21 to take a 69-41 lead into the fourth.
And even though the Wesmen went deep into their bench for the final 10 minutes, Winnipeg still held the Cougars to seven points in the final quarter, pulling away for its fourth straight win over MRU, a streak that stretches back to 2017.
Malachi Alexander and
Kato Jaro both had 14 points and five rebounds off the bench to lead five Wesmen players in double-digit scoring. The two also combined to go 12 of 16 from the field and 4-for-5 from three.
Mikhail Mikhailov had 12 points and nine rebounds,
Alberto Gordo added 11 and five, and
Donald Stewart chipped in with 10 points for the Wesmen.
Shawn Maranan gave out a game-high seven assists.
The Cougars fell to 3-4 with their fourth straight loss and season-low scoring output.
The 48 points were MRU's lowest in a game since a 91-46 loss at Calgary in January 2019.
The Wesmen held the Cougars to 1-for-20 shooting from three, MRU's lowest three-point output since Feb. 14, 2014 when the Cougars went 1-for-23 against UNBC.
Holt Tomie led the Cougars with 13 points and nine rebounds, but was held to 2-for-13 shooting.
MRU made just 13 field goals on 60 attempts on the night, the program's lowest percentage since shooting an identical 21.7 per cent in a loss to UBC-Okanagan Nov. 15, 2014. It also marked the fewest field goals made in Mount Royal program history.
Winnipeg shot 45.1 per cent from the field and was 7 of 24 from three.
