CALGARY — The Winnipeg Wesmen were saddled with a road-weary start to the Canada West season, but they've come through it without a scratch.
The Wesmen men's basketball team won its seventh game of the season Saturday, knocking off the Mount Royal Cougars 83-72 to cap off their first-semester away schedule a perfect 6-0.
The conference schedule-makers saddled the Wesmen with six of their first eight games away from home, but in a conference where road splits are often acceptable or welcomed, the Wesmen went further, finishing tours in B.C. and Alberta without a defeat.
On Saturday, the Cougars did all they could to put a blemish on that clean record with a fourth-quarter threat that came one night after posting historic lows in scoring and shooting.
The Wesmen led by as many as 10 in the third quarter and were up 62-54 with 2:03 to go in the period but the Wesmen went without a field goal for the next 3:10 and the Cougars went on a 14-5 run to briefly take the lead 68-67 with 4:54 remaining.
But the Cougars wouldn't make a field goal the rest of the way.
Shawn Maranan hit a three on the next possession that spurred an 11-2 Wesmen run that allowed them to improve to 7-1 on the season and remain in the top three of the Canada West.
Alberto Gordo had 21 points, nine rebounds and four steals to lead the Wesmen, who also got 14 points off the bench from freshman
Kato Jaro. Jaro, who matched his career-high for points set on Friday, was 6-for-8 from the field and 2 of 4 from three.
Donald Stewart added 14 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out, and
Emmanuel Thomas had 10 points and six rebounds.
The Cougars (3-5) got 22 points from Holt Tomie and 16 apiece from Keivonte Watts and Sam Barnie. Killian Yopa had 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
The Wesmen return home to end their first semester with a weekend set against the Saskatchewan Huskies.
