CALGARY — The Winnipeg Wesmen are still looking for a complete four quarters in their quest to get back in the win column.
The Wesmen women's basketball team was plagued by a low-scoring third quarter but otherwise played level with the Mount Royal Cougars in a 69-59 Canada West conference loss on Saturday night.
Jennifer Kallon scored a career-high 19 points and added seven rebounds and five steals for the Wesmen, who fell to 1-7 ahead of next weekend's semester-ending series with Saskatchewan looming at home.
The Wesmen, who trailed 43-38 at half, were held to five points and shot 2-for-13 (1-for-11 from three) in the third quarter as the Cougars (6-2) pulled away further with a 12-2 run coming out of the break. The Wesmen were held to just one field goal over the first 6:40 of the quarter.
MRU pushed its lead to as many as 17 in the fourth quarter and the Wesmen managed one more mini-run late, scoring seven straight to trim the lead down to 67-59 with under a minute to play.
Anna Kernaghan added 13 points for the Wesmen, and
Raia Guinto scored 12.
Tamiya Ness had a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Cougars by the 19 points and 10 rebounds off the bench from Harriette MacKenzie. Tanis Metcalfe had 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Abbey Wilkinson scored 10.
The Wesmen were outrebounded 56-44.
