MVB | Wesmen dominate T-Birds for 3rd straight win

The Winnipeg Wesmen added to their resume of quality wins in the Canada West conference Friday night.

The Wesmen men's volleyball team earned its third straight win against a ranked opponent with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-20) dismantling of the No. 7-ranked UBC Thunderbirds in a conference match at the Duckworth Centre.

It was No. 8 Winnipeg's first straight-sets win of the season and followed two victories last weekend over No. 9 Trinity Western, as the Wesmen ran their record to 4-1 ahead of Saturday's rematch (5 p.m.).

Isaiah Olfert led the Wesmen with 11 kills and had three of the team's eight aces. Winnipeg made just nine errors on 73 swings, attacking at a .260 clip for the match.

Olfert, the reigning U Sports player of the week, also had a  team-high seven digs.

Paxton Koop also had three aces as well as four block assists.

On the other side, UBC was held to .167 in the first and .064 in the third as the T-Birds amassed 17 attack errors in that span. They finished .161 for the night.

The win also snapped a five-match Wesmen losing streak to UBC dating back to 2019, the last time the Thunderbirds visited Winnipeg.

Reeve Gingera had 10 kills to lead the Thunderbirds, who came in off a bye week following two season-opening wins against Mount Royal.

Logan Greves had a match-high 11 digs.
