Given the way the last two weeks have gone, maybe the Winnipeg Wesmen aren't entirely happy to see a bye week on the horizon.
Â
The No. 8-ranked Wesmen men's volleyball team posted another impressive victory Saturday, taking down the No. 7 UBC Thunderbirds 3-0 (28-26, 25-19, 25-14) in a Canada West conference match Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.Â
Â
Nigel Nielsen had 18 kills and hit .577 as the Wesmen won their fourth straight match, all coming against ranked teams.Â
Â
The Thunderbirds, who were also swept on Friday, were their most threatening in the first set as they took three-point leads at 11-8 and, later, at 22-19 as they looked to turn the tables and earn a weekend split.
Â
The Wesmen, however, won three straight points to equalize at 22. UBC held a set point at 24-23 following a
Liam Kristjanson serving error and again at 25-24 on an
Isaiah Olfert service error. Winnipeg would close out the first set off a James Vincett serving error and Nielsen kill, and the T-Birds weren't able to muster much more of a threat the rest of the night.
Â
The Wesmen (5-1) hit .402 as they swept the weekend and got off to the program's best start to a season since a 6-0 opening to the 2017-18 campaign.
Â
Isaiah Olfert had 14 kills and a career-high and match-high 14 digs for the Wesmen.
Â
UBC (1-3) was led by Reeve Gingera's seven kills, while Logan Greves had a team-high seven digs. The Thunderbirds hit .113 for the match.Â
