WVB | Wesmen women can't slow down rolling Thunderbirds

The Winnipeg Wesmen will have a week off to regroup and, yet again, reload for a showdown with one of the top teams in Canada.

The No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds earned a weekend sweep and sent the Wesmen women's volleyball team to its fifth straight defeat with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-21) Canada West conference win Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen (1-5) are facing a hellacious start to conference play.

The Wesmen, who have faced the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked teams the past two weekends, now have to regroup with a showdown in Edmonton against the No. 3-ranked Alberta Pandas awaiting them on the other side of the coming bye week.

The Thunderbirds (4-0) hit a sterling .379 for the match while holding Winnipeg to .068.

UBC hit .448 in the first and .464 in the second set and won handily despite giving away 20 points through service errors.

Grace Vallis and Christine Kolbuck had five kills to lead the Wesmen and Brooke Duncalfe posted a match-high eight digs.

Akash Grewal and Claire Cossarini led the T-Birds with 12 kills with Grewal adding a team-high seven digs.
