A gutsy effort to eliminate a double-digit deficit was soured Saturday for the Winnipeg Wesmen.
The Trinity Western Spartans outscored the Wesmen 8-1 over the final minute of play and broke the hearts of the home side with an 82-79 win in a Canada West women's basketball game at the Duckworth Centre.Â
The result pushed the Wesmen out of a top-four position in the Canada West, meaning they will go on the road for the first round of playoffs. The Wesmen will be the 6-seed and will have a play-in game against No. 11 Mount Royal at Calgary on Feb. 17. The Dinos earned the hosting spot by finishing as the 3-seed and will play the winner.
Anna Kernaghan hit a three-pointer with 1:10 left in the fourth that put the Wesmen up four. But Hailey Van Roekel connected on a three of her own with 45 seconds left that made it 78-77 Winnipeg. Kernaghan then went 1-2 at the line on the ensuing possession, and Van Roekel hit another three the next time down to give the Spartans the lead for good.Â
Raizel Guinto had a shot to tie with a layup at the rim that just rolled off. The Spartans made two free throws after that and the Wesmen were unable to get a shot off on the final possession.Â
The Spartans were electric from three all night, making 11 of 23, including four of seven in the fourth quarter.Â
The Wesmen trailed by as many as 13 in the second quarter and went into the half down 42-36.Â
On Senior Night, fifth-year forward
Julia Schatkowsky had 23 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead the Wesmen (15-5). Fifth-year guard
Raizel Guinto added 16 with seven assists and five steals.
Robyn Boulanger, the only senior who played all five seasons with the Wesmen, played her final game at the Duckworth Centre and had 15 points and six assists.Â
Kernaghan finished with 16 points and five assists, and made three of five from three.Â
Jayden Gill's 23 points led the Spartans (12-8), who got 16 points and 15 rebounds from senior Nicole Fransson. Van Roekel finished with 11 and senior Jolene Vlieg added 10.
