Box Score CALGARY — With their season on the line, the Winnipeg Wesmen came up with one of their biggest stretches of the year.
The Wesmen women's basketball team tore off a 21-2 run over a span of 6:30 of the fourth quarter to come from behind and beat the Mount Royal Cougars 86-73 in a Canada West first-round play-in game Friday afternoon at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
Robyn Boulanger had a career-high 29 points — and hit 6 of 12 from three — to lead the Wesmen, who will play the host Calgary Dinos in a quarter-final game Saturday at U of C.
Raizel Guinto had 20 points, nine assists and six rebounds for the Wesmen, who shot 13-for-28 from three.
Anna Kernaghan dropped 16 points, with six rebounds and four assists, and
Julia Schatkowsky had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
"It took us a while to get into it, but once we did I thought they battled and played really hard and played really well," Wesmen head coach Alyssa Cox said.
"(Boulanger's) done a ton of great things for us this season. Defensively she's always tough, she's someone who always speaks up in the locker-room and helps get us back on track. We can't thank her enough for her performance."
The Cougars led by as many as 10 points and carried a 69-65 lead with 7:43 to go in the fourth quarter when Winnipeg went on its big run.
Jamie Lalor had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead the way for MRU, which shot 4-for-17 from three and 34.1 per cent from the field.
Jenessa Ramsoomair came off the bench to score 16 on 7-for-12 shooting, and Megan Wellinghurst chipped in with 10 points.
"They're a talented team and it became kind of a scoring-fest, as you can see," MRU head coach Robyn Fleckenstein said. "And we couldn't keep up.
"I love my team. They'd run through a wall for each other, and I think they demonstrated that today, and sometimes the shots just don't fall."
The Wesmen will take on the Dinos at 2 p.m. CT in a game that can be seen live on
Canada West TV.
