WVB | Wesmen earn historic win to stay in top 3 of Canada West

VANCOUVER — The Winnipeg Wesmen pulled off a never-before-seen feat Saturday to stay in the top three of the Canada West conference.

Ashleigh Laube hit the 1,000 career kills mark and the Wesmen women's volleyball team earned its second win in as many nights at the War Memorial Gymnasium, downing the UBC Thunderbirds 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 26-24) marking the first time in program history they've swept the T-Birds at home.

The Wesmen improved to 16-6 on the season and now sit in a three-way tie with UBC and Fraser Valley for third place behind Trinity Western (20-2) and Mount Royal (17-5).

The Wesmen will close their conference season next weekend at home with a pair of matches against the Saskatchewan Huskies. The top four teams in the conference host best-of-three first-round playoff series.

Laube finished with 10 kills and 16 digs and became just the fourth player in Canada West history to join the 1,000/1,000 Club for kills and digs in a career. She joined teammate Emma Parker, who did it earlier this season.

Parker led the way with 20 kills and 12 digs, and Selva Planincic added 12 kills while matching a career-high with 17 digs.

Portia Switzer had 15 digs and Taylor Cangemi dug up 12 as the Wesmen notched 83 digs as a team, a season-high for a four-set match.

The Wesmen were the beneficiaries of crucial UBC mistake in the fourth set. Tied 23-23 and coming out of a timeout, the Thunderbirds made an illegal sub that wasn't acknowledged until the end of the point, a point UBC had won. The officials, however, called the T-Birds out of rotation, flipping the point to the Wesmen.

UBC would score the next point to tie it back up at 24, but kills by Laube and Taylor Kleysen secured the win for Winnipeg.

UBC head coach Doug Reimer told UBC Sports Information they would file a protest of the match with the league.

The Wesmen hit .211 on the match and had 10 block assists and one solo.

UBC, which was held to .178 attacking, got 17 kills and 11 digs from Elise Petit, and 10 and 13 from Erika Vermette. Kacey Jost had a match-high 22 digs.
