VANCOUVER — It's been a long, long time since the Winnipeg Wesmen got a win like this.
The Wesmen women's volleyball team came from behind in a crucial fourth set to pull off a rare win at War Memorial Gym, dropping the No. 4-ranked UBC Thunderbirds 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 11-25, 25-23) in a Canada West conference match Friday night.
The win snapped an 11-match losing streak to the Thunderbirds and marked the first victory over UBC — and at War Memorial — since Nov. 21, 2014.
More importantly, it put the Wesmen at 15-6 on the season and kept them in the top four in the conference with three matches to play. Winnipeg is now just one match back of second-place UBC (16-5) and Mount Royal.
Emma Parker had 14 kills and 13 digs to lead the Wesmen, who won for the sixth time in seven matches.
Ashleigh Laube added 10 kills and 10 digs as she inched closer to the 1,000 career kills mark. Laube now stands at 998 heading into Saturday's match (7 p.m. CT).
Selva Planincic had nine kills and a career-high 17 digs, and
Taylor Cangemi had 13 digs. The Wesmen had 75 digs as a team, the fifth time this season they've topped 70 digs and the third time they've done it in a four-set match.
As UBC was looking to force a fifth set, the Wesmen rallied late. Trailing 20-16, Winnipeg tore off three straight points to get to within one. They also trailed 23-21 before scoring four straight points to close out the win.
Elise Petit led UBC with 14 kills and 15 digs. Kacey Jost had a match-high 25 digs.
Both teams hit .158 on the night.
