VANCOUVER — The Winnipeg Wesmen will head into the final weekend of the season needing wins and help to make the Canada West playoffs.
Nigel Nielsen had 10 kills but the Wesmen men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-18) decision to the UBC Thunderbirds Saturday nigh at War Memorial Gymnasium.
The Wesmen dropped to 8-14 on the season and are now on the outside looking in at the eight positions that make up the conference post-season.
The Wesmen are tied for ninth with Trinity Western and stand a match back of the Manitoba Bisons, who got two wins on the weekend over Fraser Valley to move into eighth. The Wesmen will need to beat the Saskatchewan Huskies twice next weekend at home and hope Manitoba loses twice to Calgary.
Saturday night, the Wesmen .178 for the match, including a match-best .333 in the second set. The T-Birds, however, were incredibly efficient, attacking at .386 for the match, including .556 in the second set. They made just eight errors on 83 swings.
Matt Klysh had seven kills on 10 swings with no errors for the Wesmen, who got a team-high six digs from
Darian Picklyk.
Matt Neaves led the Thunderbirds (13-9) with 12 kills. Logan Greves had a match-high 12 digs.
Friday night's match will be part of Indigenous Night at the Duckworth Centre, while Saturday will represent Senior Night.
