A match that started late could not end soon enough for the Winnipeg Wesmen.
Â
Katalin Tolnai scored three goals and added four assists and the No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds ran away with a 10-0 Canada West conference women's soccer win Friday night at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.Â
Â
Tolnai scored in the 16th and 33rd minutes to help stake the T-Birds (5-0-0) to a 3-0 lead at halftime. She added the hat-trick goal in the 84th minute, her fifth marker of the season as UBC maintained its spot atop the Pacific Division, five points clear of second-place UBC-Okanagan.Â
Â
Tolnai's seven points marked a UBC program record for points in a match and tied the Canada West mark set by Calgary's Jordan Smith in 2016.Â
Â
Her four assists tied a UBC record.Â
Â
The match was delayed 90 minutes due to a referee scheduling conflict that left both teams in limbo and trying to keep warm on a rainy night when temperatures dropped to 12 C.Â
Â
The Wesmen (0-5-2) were under siege early and often, surrendering 26 shots, 17 on goal, with 11 UBC corners also on the tally.Â
Â
Madison Priebe made seven saves in the Winnipeg goal.Â
Â
Taiya Dennehy, Vanessa Tome, Nisa Reehal, Ella Sunde, Ella Nuttall-Smith, Sophia Kramer and Aislin Phillips had the other UBC goals.Â
Â
The Wesmen will host the UNBC Timberwolves on Saturday (7 p.m., Canada West TV) to close out the weekend.
