Madison Priebe did everything she could to help the Winnipeg Wesmen pull off an upset of a Canada West power.
Priebe, the second-year keeper with the Wesmen women's soccer team, set a new program record for saves in a game, but the Wesmen weren't able to hold off the MacEwan Griffins in a 2-0 defeat Saturday afternoon.Â
Priebe made 17 stops on a scorching day when temperatures reached 37 C. Her total is tied for the fifth most all-time in Canada West history and stands as the most saves in a game so far this season across the conference.
Priebe set a career-high for saves last weekend with 15 in a loss at Calgary, and surpassed teammate
Taryn Raabe (15, 2022) and Justina Jamoszko (15, 2015) to set the program's all-time single-game mark.Â
The Wesmen escaped the first half at 0-0 despite the Griffins earning nine corners in the first half and generating 12 shots. MacEwan, which won the national championship in 2021, finished with 28 shots, 19 on goal, and 14 corners.Â
The Griffins broke through early in the second half with Grace Mwasalla netting her fourth of the season in the 48th minute. Mwasalla would add her conference-leading fifth goal in the 75th minute when a corner dropped into the Wesmen box and Mwasalla found herself free to flick it in.
MacEwan improved to 3-0-0 on the season, while the Wesmen dropped to 0-3-0.
The Wesmen will host the Alberta Pandas on Sunday at noon at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.
