REGINA — The Winnipeg Wesmen opened their non-conference season with a decisive win on the road Friday night.
Mikhail Mikhailov scored 26 points and 11 rebounds as the Wesmen men's basketball team rolled to an 89-69 win over the Regina Cougars in their first non-conference game of the season.
The Wesmen opened with 6-0 and 10-2 runs and never trailed throughout the night. Mikhailov scored the team's first eight points and had 12 through the first quarter and 18 at the half, when the Wesmen took a 53-39 lead.
Alberto Gordo finished with 12 points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists.
The Wesmen dominated with a 49-33 rebound advantage including a 17-3 edge in offensive boards.
All tolled, 11 Wesmen scored at least two points and all 14 players who travelled recorded a stat.
Freshmen
Noah Kankam and
Kato Jaro each made their first impressions, with Jaro scoring eight points on 3-4 shooting in 14 minutes, and Kankam also scoring eight with two three-pointers in the second half.
The Wesmen shot 46.9 per cent from the field and 33.3 per cent from three after making four of eight from the perimeter in the first half.
Regina was led by Matt Barnard and Jalen Edwards, both of whom had 12 points.
The Cougars shot 44.8 per cent from the field and were held to 26.7 per cent from three.
The Wesmen will face the Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday at 7 p.m. CT before returning home.
