ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — The Winnipeg Wesmen fell short of finishing a reverse sweep on the road Friday.
The Wesmen men's volleyball team battled back from two sets down, but fell in five, dropping a 3-2 (25-17, 25-16, 13-25, 19-25, 15-9) Canada West conference decision to the host Fraser Valley Cascades.
It was the first time this season the Wesmen had been down two sets and forced a fifth.
Isaiah Olfert led the Wesmen (8-7) with 14 kills, while
Nigel Nielsen had 12 with 11 digs and two aces.
Ethan Duncan had season-highs with 11 kills and nine digs. He hit .563 with only two errors on 16 swings.
Setter
Alex Krykewich, who had 30 assists, matched Nielsen for the team-high with 11 digs and now leads the team in that category. Krykewich is 10th in the country in digs and second among setters.
The Wesmen hit .223 as a team while Fraser Valley (5-8) hit .274 and snapped a five- match losing streak in the process.
Winnipeg is 3-3 in its last six matches and now sits in seventh place in the Canada West with nine matches to play. The top eight teams qualify for the post-season.
UFV got 23 kills from Nimo Benne and 10 from Jonas Van Huizen. Reece Wilson picked up 11 digs.
