WBB | First-half runs help Pandas pull away on Wesmen

The Alberta Pandas pulled off two end-of-quarter runs to put space on the scoreboard and hand the Winnipeg Wesmen a home defeat Friday night.

The Pandas closed the first quarter with a 15-0 run and ended the half with a 16-5 spell en route to a 72-44 Canada West conference women's basketball victory at the Duckworth Centre.

Alberta improved to 8-3 while the Wesmen had a modest two-game win streak snapped and fell to 3-10.

The Wesmen held a 13-11 lead on two Raia Guinto free throws with 4:26 to go in the first quarter before the Pandas put together their first significant string of points. A Jenna Harpe three with 3:38 to go got the Pandas rolling and Winnipeg was held to 0-for-5 shooting and five turnovers in the end-of-quarter stretch.

Guinto led the Wesmen with 16 points and was 3-for-6 from three. Anna Kernaghan had seven points and seven rebounds.

Winnipeg was 17-for-54 from the field and made five of 22 from three.

Harpe's 22 points paced the Pandas, who shot 40 per cent from the field and 7 of 21 from three. Kiah Easton-Ihediohanma added 14 points and Shae McCusker 12.

The two teams meet again Saturday at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at wesmen.ca/tickets.
