MBB | Wesmen give up big lead, fall to Golden Bears

The Alberta Golden Bears turned the tables on the Winnipeg Wesmen.

One night after blowing a double-digit lead in a loss, the Golden Bears flipped the script and turned a big comeback into an 87-81 Canada West conference men's basketball win Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.

The Bears, who were outscored 22-11 in a loss on Friday, came back from 19 points down in the second half and earned a split of the weekend. The Wesmen fell to 9-5 while Alberta improved to 7-5.

The Wesmen used a 17-3 second-quarter run to pull ahead, and they held a 48-33 lead at the half, limiting Alberta to just nine points over the final 9:30 of the second quarter. Winnipeg extended that lead to 58-39 on two Mikhail Mikhailov free throws with 6:45 to go in the third.

That's when Alberta turned things around.

The Bears proceeded to tear off a 14-0 run that trimmed it to five with 2:56 to go, and they went into the fourth down 63-58. The Wesmen went without a point for a stretch of 6:47 as the Bears wiped out the deficit and pulled ahead 72-63 on an Isaac Simon three with 5:01 remaining. The Wesmen would not get closer than four the rest of the way.

Donald Stewart had 19 points and five rebounds to lead the way for the Wesmen, who got 18 from Shawn Maranan and 12 points and 10 rebounds from Mikhailov.

Brandon Meiklejohn had a game-high 28 points — and six threes — to pace Alberta. Simon finished with 21 and Lars Ishimwe added 18.
