Mikhail Mikhailov put together his best performance of the season and the Winnipeg Wesmen rolled to their third win in four games.
Mikhailov scored his first career 30-point game and added nine rebounds as the Wesmen men's basketball team dominated in a 93-63 Canada West conference victory over the MacEwan Griffins at the Duckworth Centre.Â
Mikhailov made his first nine two-point field goals and finished the game 13-for-18 from the field, including 1-for-2 from three. He bettered his previous career-high of 25 set last season in a win versus Trinity Western.
The Wesmen are 3-2 in the month of January and improved to 10-5 on the season. Their RPI, however, has them sitting in eighth place with five games remaining. The RPI determines the seeding for the 12-team conference tournament in February.Â
MacEwan (0-15) was within eight early in the second quarter but the Wesmen closed the half outscoring the visitors 25-12 capped by a
Shawn Maranan three before the buzzer that gave them a 50-29 halftime lead.Â
Maranan matched his career-high with 13 assists and scored 15 points while adding four steals.
Elijah Mensah scored 15 off the bench and
Donald Stewart added 12.
The Griffins, who entered the game with the ninth-most offensive rebounds in the country, managed just seven to Winnipeg's 18 and were outrebounded 44-28 overall.
Milan Jaksic scored 12 points to lead the Griffins, who have lost 63 straight conference games. Matthew Osunde added 11 points and Thai Haak scored 10.Â
The Wesmen shot 47.9 per cent from the field and made 6 of 18 from three, while the Griffins were held to 2 of 11 from three and shot 44.3 per cent overall.
